Greetings from Cane Creek and we hope you are enjoying the incredible break from the heat. Though we will miss summer and the long beautiful evenings, some of her days were brutal this year and we are glad she has released her grasp for the moment. With that comes the need to catch up on everything and send out our now almost seasonal newsletter.
The gardens have continued to thrive this summer, meaning more work but hopefully happy customers too. We’re harvesting peppers, edamame, and eggplants, and the end of tomatoes and melons. We started digging up sweet potatoes this week, and they are beautiful! As our summer garden comes to its close, we’re also planting the fall garden. This will include broccoli, lettuce, collards, cabbage, brussels and beets.
Pigs- The fall is a great time to be a pig at the farm- nuts are falling, weather is crisper, summer pig pickins are over. We’re continuing to downsize the herd and are happy with how everyone is looking. On the retail end- we have more Ossabaw prosciutto in, as well as an order of bacon heading back from the coast. We’ll have chops, butts, and ribs for grilling this weekend, and we’ve caught back up on sausages.
Restaurants- As we downsize our herd, it’s important that we figure out the most effective ways to sell our limited pigs. We’ve been thrilled to see more and more restaurants willing to buy whole pigs- saving us processing costs and helping us move entire animals. The Saxapahaw General Store does this each week, and Elliotts on Linden (in Pinehurst), Acme and Vimala’s Curryblossom in Carrboro, and Mandolin in Raleigh are doing it frequently as well. Pay a visit and see what these restaurants are up to.
Turkeys- Ross can’t wait to get rid of these turkeys. As happens every year, our heritage breed turkeys are full of life, curious and very big and klutzy (a dangerous combination really). Check out the website to reserve your bird. We are selling them for $7.50/lb as in the past, Get yours now! In the meantime, we’ll see what we can do about moving thanksgiving up a few months…
Lamb- we’ll continue to have lamb frequently throughout the fall, and goat will be more available as well.
Beef- We will start selling beef again this fall. We’ll let market folks know when we begin. As always, you can buy beef on Thursdays (2-6) and Saturdays (10-4) at the farm store.
Greensboro- Grace (Summer’s Farm) is still bringing limited quantities to the Curb Market most Saturdays. Please feel free to write us with special requests and/or to double check that we’ll be there. With a bit less inventory, we send most to Carrboro because we have so many customers there, but we do not want you all to miss out, and we have duck, goat or lamb and pork available most weeks of the year.
Thanks for supporting us and see you in town or out in Snow Camp!
