The food at Neal’s Deli is resolutely everyday and American — like breakfast biscuits stuffed with egg and sausage — but the eggs are steamed tender with a touch of pepper and parsley, and the wide, crisp biscuits are mixed from high-fat local buttermilk and organic flour from a nearby mill that’s been held by the same family for nine generations. The sausage patty is from Cane Creek Farm in Alamance County, where Eliza MacLean, an owner of the farm and a former veterinarian, advises farmers across the state on the transition from tobacco to pork. Party ‘could lead to excessive laughing’

Yesterday, we received several phone calls and emails inquiring about the Arabian Nights event on Sept 19th. All saying they heard about the event in the News and Observer. What?? We had no idea that Andrea Weigl was going to talk about our event in the Food & Fitness section. But we sure are glad she did! Thank you Andrea.

“Margaret Gifford makes her rounds on a recent Wednesday evening near closing time at the Carrboro Farmers’ Market. With a cardboard box in hand, she reminds farmers that she’s there to collect any produce they can’t sell and won’t keep until the next market day.

“We’re collecting as always,” Gifford tells Hailey Moses, who works for Cane Creek Farm.

“I have some stuff for you,” Moses says, and hands yellow squash and zucchini to Gifford.

“Charlie Sydnor is “Doc” to most who know him. The opthamologist excels at neuro-opthalmology, so much so that some patients travel from Durham to Burlington to see him.”

“But Sydnor often calls himself a rancher, or farmer. That’s where he’s most content — on his sprawling 500-acre farm, about 13 miles from his Burlington practice.”

“Here, dogs run, tongues out and tails wagging. Cows bellow as they graze on rolling green pastures. Muddy pig pens are filled with 800-pound hogs and tiny piglets, their snouts dusty from gobbling grain. Tractors hum in the distance, and trucks crunch on gravel.”

“Eliza MacLean, former wildlife rescuer and adventure racer turned hog farmer, keeps everything running. She lives on the farm with her 7-year-old twins who are growing up planting produce and gathering freshly laid eggs.”

“Sydnor’s farm, Braeburn, adjoins MacLean’s 20-acre Cane Creek farm. They merged their operations about a year ago, forming Wells Branch Farm.”
