Wells Branch serves up tasty lunch and timely information at the 2008 Piedmont Green Gala

If you attended the 1st annual Piedmont Green Gala on Oct. 4th, chances are you got to sample one of Charles Sydnors famous burgers or Eliza MacLean's 'Frankly Eliza' hot dogs. Wells Branch, (a collaboration between Cane Creek Farm and Braeburn Farm, was a proud sponsor of the Piedmont Green Gala, providing a mouth watering lunch of grilled hamburgers (technically ground beef, not hamburger) and hot dogs served up on fresh, locally made buns provided by Ninth St Bakery of Durham.

Charlie Sydnor also co-hosted a talk on Sustainable Agriculture, where he discussed the benefits and challenges of creating a healthy local food economy.

After the formal discussion, Charlie Sydnor and Eliza MacLean (below) chatted with local residents of Alamance County answering questions about Wells Branch Farms, local agriculture, food safety, food ethics, animal welfare, etc.

Thanks to to 300+ people who made this event a huge success. We hope you see you there next year!

We are excited and flattered that Andrea Weigl chose to feature our farm in her recent (August 10th, 2008) article for the Raleigh News and Observer.

Heritage-breed pig fattens in a pasture at a farm in Snow Camp

"How did the little piggie get to market?
For pig No. 9251, one of seven piglets born last July on a 500-acre farm in Snow Camp, it came after 10 months spent running around pastures with dozens of other pigs, rooting for acorns in wooded groves and fattening up on feed.

When it was time to go to the meat-packing plant 32 miles away, this pig twice escaped the farmer's grasp. But not for long.

His pork chops and ham steaks were sold at the Carrboro Farmers' Market. His bellies and shoulders were made into bacon and confit and served at some of the Triangle's best restaurants.

Pig No. 9251 is just what people here increasingly seem to want: Animals raised in pastures and not on concrete, that traveled just a few miles to their table. They want to know how the farmer treated the animals…."

Farm Update: Our littlest goat is 3 months old!

You may remember ‘Flea’ from our April 11th post. Why such a strange name for this beautiful blue-eyed, girly, goat kid? Because like a flea, she is tough as nails…surviving and thriving against the odd. She is the smallest baby goat ever born on the farm and it was questionable if she would survive her first 24 hours. But she has surprised us with her tenacity, surviving her first day, week, month and is now a pretty, sweet, mischevious, loving three months old.
